History of Community Synagogue

In 1948, a group of families in the Rye area created a Reform Jewish congregation. Through the generosity of some of the founding families, the old mansion on Forest Avenue was purchased. It was there under the spiritual leadership of Rabbi Samuel Gordon that Community Synagogue grew and flourished. In 1961, a new structure was erected adjacent to the mansion to house the sanctuary, religious school, and social hall.

After the retirement of Rabbi Gordon in 1966, Rabbi Robert A. Rothman became the spiritual leader of our synagogue. During the following years, our activities increased and Community Synagogue membership continued to grow.

On June 30, 1997, after 31 years as rabbi of our congregation, Rabbi Rothman became Rabbi Emeritus, and Rabbi Rachel S. Mikva became Community Synagogue's third spiritual leader.

The summer of 2003 marked the beginning of a new and exciting chapter in the history of Community Synagogue. On July 1, we welcomed our fourth and current spiritual leader of the congregation, Rabbi Daniel Gropper. Also that summer we began the construction of the new and enlarged educational facility. While this meant saying farewell to the stately mansion, it also marked the start of a new and vital period of growth for the congregation.

We have an ambitious religious education program for children and adults, numerous opportunities to become involved in social action, beautiful worship services, and life cycle celebrations. Our enthusiastic and active committees help make our synagogue a dynamic and caring community.

Our membership represents a number of nearby communities, including Rye, Rye Brook, Harrison, White Plains, Mamaroneck, Armonk, and Greenwich, Connecticut.
